What sets Grixis apart from the rest is Kess, Dissident Mage and Maestros Ascendancy. These cards allow you to Consultation for Oracle then Consultation again right away. This power, consistency and small number of cards that aren’t your commander makes Grixis an ideal home for Thoracle decks. Is great card advantage, but kind of slow in comparison the the rest of the deck. This card can get the instant win of Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and Zealous Conscripts directly into play, but is still good if you search up big beaters like Atarka, World Render to finish your opponents.
When I first decided to buy a preconstructed commander deck to try out the format, Prossh was only my third choice. I had seen the early spoilers of the cards in Commander 2013 and decided to buy the Mindseize deck with Jeleva, Nephalia’s Scourge as commander. When I arrived at my local game store to pick up the deck I found that all copies of the deck had been bought already because the deck contained Baleful Strix and True-Name Nemesis.
If you’ve ever wanted to play Black LotusBlack Lotus in EDH without needing to rule 0, then Garth One-EyeGarth One-Eye is the card for you. Garth has a unique ability that taps to allow you to cast some of Magic‘s most iconic cards – including the extremely powerful and fabled Black LotusBlack Lotus. The new update on commander allows a replacement effect for tuck effects that would place a commander into the library or into the hand; it could then be placed in the command zone instead. This makes some major changes to the format as cards like Hinder and Spell Crumple are much less useful now.
Commander (
Adding a simple haste enabler then allows Garth to tap again, cast Black Lotus and blink itself. You can also steal Garth’s ability using Quicksilver ElementalQuicksilver Elemental which can keep getting separate instances of the ability to keep making more Black Loti.
WinCondition (
Being able to recover a win condition from the grave yard is essential for many commander decks weather they be creatures, enchantments, artifacts et. It is important to plan for when a particular win condition falls through either by having a backup or by having a recovery method (every deck should have more than one win condition). Earlier we looked at Dragon Appeasement, and I mentioned there were better and cheaper alternatives. Well, we have come to that alternative in Korvold, Fae-Cursed KingKorvold, Fae-Cursed King. Korvold has a similar ability to Dragon Appeasement, but with some notable differences. First, Korvold’s ability triggers for any permanent versus just creatures.
#5: Prossh, Skyraider of Kher
A strong kindred deck piece, alongside a strong combo piece, makes Morophon a great option for any kindred focused deck. Exquisite Blood- This card is part of a combo in mono black decks that use Sanguine Bond to do infinite damage. It is also good in any black deck as it essentially says all creatures player controls have lifelink. Xenagos +1 ability is broken after you cast Prossh and can shine by creating insane amounts of mana most of the time. His ability to create hasty 2/2 creature tokens can be relevant to preserve your life total or his loyalty but can be uses with the various sacrifice outlets in the deck to generate value.
It may seem to some that combos are better when they end games, but it really depends on when and how that is happening. The difference here is subtle, but I meta mtg don’t like losing to someone when they win using the same two or three cards every single game. This is one of the many reasons I don’t usually like having tutors in my decks. In fact, I would go so far as to say that game-ending combos destroy the soul of the casual Commander format.
Rukarumel, BiologistRukarumel, Biologist is a card designed for both Sliver decks and for type changer decks, and can be a great include or commander in both. Type changers are excellent to turn cards like Requiem AngelRequiem Angel or Bishop of WingsBishop of Wings into easy infinite combo engines. Staff of Domination- This card can be baffling to first time players; why is it good?
He got the message pretty quickly that we hated playing against that deck. Am I advocating that you should solve your own play group issues by playing for salty seconds? Does this make me a sore loser and more importantly, are you if you employ this tactic? The problem of infinitely repetitive play in a format that people often come to in order to find variety and dream fulfillment.
Cards with X in their mana cost are often good to consider because of the large amounts of mana EDH decks have to play with. Cards like Fireball, Blue Sun Zenith, Mind Twist, etc are often better in games than other basic or static spells like Lightning Strike or Duress. While Grixis benefits greatly from Red in ways that aren’t Red’s ability to turn iterations of a combo into ways to end the game, Red’s knack for dealing infinite damage is no less important in Grixis com-bos. While Goblin Bombardment is a very common way to get something for all of your looping, Red also has a tendency to deal damage when something enters the battlefield. Murderous Redcap is frequently featured in Grixis combos because with cards like Spark Double and Marchesa, the Black Rose you can allow Redcap to be the sole combo piece, functioning as both the looped card and the damage outlet. There are a ton of different ways to make copies of important combo pieces in Red, and Blue and Black have some excellent ways to use that ability to end the game, or take infinite turns.
Cards like Counterlash and Spelljack are very powerful counters in mono blue control decks as they not only answer an opponents threat but put a threat into play. To further elaborate when choosing cards one should try to be as general as possible for example avoid cards that say things like Go for the Throat or Doomblade that say destroy target non-blank creature. The reason for this is even though they are one mana less than cards like Murder and Hero’s Downfall they are infinitely worse against decks that play the type of creature excluded. Also another thing to exclude are cards like Choke or Virtue’s Ruin that negatively affect only one color type as you might not always face that color type. Sek’Kuar, DeathkeeperSek’Kuar, Deathkeeper allows you to replenish your army when they die, by creating a 3/1 Graveborn whenever you have a nontoken creature die. Sek’Kuar allows any other nontoken creature to go infinite with Nim DeathmantleNim Deathmantle and Ashnod’s Altar, allowing you to take advantage of your choice of enter-the-battlefield (ETB) or leave-the-battlefield (LTB) abilities.
Soul of Windgrace has three abilities that lets you discard land cards, and then a triggered ability to bring those lands back to the battlefield. This allows you to play an extra land each turn as long as Soul of Windgrace attacks. Soul of Windgrace’s abilities also have combo potential with cards like Bone MiserBone Miser, Dakmor SalvageDakmor Salvage and Surly BadgersaurSurly Badgersaur. Adding an ability cost reducer like Agatha of the Vile CauldronAgatha of the Vile Cauldron helps to make comboing even easier and cheaper.
